SUMMIT, NJ - Heavy snow accumulation caused a section of the roof to collapse at CVS Pharmacy, located at 29 DeForest Avenue.  No injuries were reported.

According to Summit Fire Department Battalion Chief Rick Locke, store personnel noticed a downed ceiling tile in the front of the store this morning, and also recognized a visible sag in the ceiling.  At that point, the decision was made to evacuate and close the store, and building management was called.

Subsequently, store personnel still inside heard a series of cracking and banging noises, and the ceiling -- located near the front of the store, near the registers and cold beverage units -- gave way.

The Summit Fire Department was called to the scene at approximately 1 p.m., and is working with building management to stabilize the roof.  Until the roof is stabilized, Maple Street, North of DeForest, is closed to vehicular traffic, and the area adjacent to the building is closed to pedestrian traffic.  The store will remain closed until further notice.

Persons wishing to fill or pick up a prescription are being told to use the CVS locations in New Providence (265 Springfield Avenue), Millburn or Springfield.  A complete list of addresses of CVS locations can be found at cvs.com.

"The weight of the snow broke the truss system," said Locke.  "Localized pressure cause the bottom cord to snap."  It also appears that the building's compressors were located above the area where the roof compromised.
