Healthy Heart Recipe Contest
Sunday, February 5, 2012 • 4:15pm
In celebration of February as Healthy Heart month, the Berkeley Heights YMCA, DeFabio Spine & Sports Rehab, Dimaio’s Restaurant, Gabriel Fitness, and Starting Line Sports have teamed together to promote a Healthy Heart Recipe Contest. The requirements are an original and heart-healthy recipe which will be reviewed and then tasted by an independent panel of judges in Berkeley Heights.
Any breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack or dessert recipe may be submitted for review. If you have re-worked a traditional family recipe to make it healthy for your heart and circulation, or if you are simply creative in the kitchen, this is the contest for you. The judges will be Chef Sal Passalacqua, of Dimaio’s, food stylist Rosie Battista, author of the Cooking Naked After 40 cookbook , and Dr. Donald DeFabio.
“Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, and this contest is designed to bring attention to how our food choices directly impact heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke” comments producer Dr. Donald DeFabio. “It is going to be very interesting to see how people interpret heart healthy which is the first step to bringing awareness to decreasing cardiovascular disease.”
Recipes will be accepted throughout the month of February, 2012 and can either be sent electronically to defabiochiropractic@gmail.com or brought directly to the office at 308 Springfield Avenue Berkeley Heights, NJ. They need to be original and include a rationale for why they are heart healthy.
After receiving all entries, the judges will review the submissions and pool together finalists who will be invited to bring their completed dish to a live tasting on Sunday, March 11, 2012 at 2 PM. The Berkeley Heights YMCA will host the final tasting which will be videotaped and broadcasted for Channel 34’s Spotlight on Berkeley Heights later in the month.
Prizes will be awarded to the Top Most Heart Healthy and delicious recipes. All finalists will be given the opportunity to have their recipe shown on the show, and posted online.
The sponsors for the inaugural Berkeley Heights Healthy Heart Recipe Contest are the Berkeley Heights YMCA, DeFabio Spine and Sports Rehab, Dimaio’s Restaurant, Gabriele Fitness and Starting Line Sports. The top prizes include:
