BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - The Harwood Gang Relay for Life Team held their annual Bingo Event last week raising $7,000 for the American Cancer Society.  Over 200 people enjoyed the fun of playing Bingo and winning raffles while socializing with friends and raising money for the cure at Mt. Carmel Hall.

Patti Broccoli, a member of the team and cancer survivor, was overwhelmed with the turn out and the generosity of so many.

"The American Cancer Society was the funding force behind the discovery of the BRCA gene mutation which ultimately saved my life and hopefully prevented cancer in my sisters.  The most important consideration for this and other hereditary cancer is to know your risk:  learn and understand your family history, talk to your doctor about genetic testing that might be available and stay informed about medical options and advances.  Self-exams and regular screening must be a priority if you want to live a long and healthy life," said Broccoli.

Broccoli and her three siblings were all tested positive for the BRCA1 genetic mutation that raises the risk of breast and ovarian cancer.  The three sisters had preventative surgery.  Patti Broccoli's preventative surgery may have saved her life by detecting cancer at an early stage.  Broccoli recently completed her treatment.

Relay for Life is being held on June 7 at Governor Livingston High School.  It’s easy to become a part of the Relay For Life movement and help finish the fight against cancer. All you need to do is sign up to participate or volunteer at your local Relay For Life event.  The next ALL TEAM and PARTICIPANT meeting is this coming Monday, March 24 at 7 p.m. at New Providence High School, 35 Pioneer Drive, New Providence - a different location than usual.
