In the early morning hours of Wednesday, the neighbors of Rogers Road in Lower Providence Township were awoken to an unusual presence of police activity along the typically quiet road.

Lower Providence Police Department (LPPD) had multiple units on the road, and police asking residents if they’d seen a handgun. The disturbing news spread quickly, and families living along the road were very worried about a missing gun being located in the child-friendly neighborhood.

June Faulkner, a resident of the road, said she saw police looking around the area.

“Police were on our road, looking in yards for a gun,” she said. “Something happened [Tuesday] night, and of course we don’t know what.”

Several hours later, the residents of the community received a telephone call with a recorded message. The call came to residents at 9:18 a.m. LPPD Chief Bud Carroll informed them that the gun had been located, and that no danger was present in the vicinity any longer.

“The handgun that had been pursuant in an overnight incident has been safely recovered by police,” said the recorded message as read by Carroll. “We are grateful for the cooperation and understanding of the residents as we work to ensure the safety of your neighborhood.”

Still the neighborhood remained confused over the police activity, and wondered why such a search was going on at all.

Carroll told LP TAP the incident was not one that began in Lower Providence.

“The incident that lead to the discarding of the gun in the area of Rogers Road actually began in West Norriton Township,” said Carroll. “Accordingly, the investigation has been turned over to West Norriton Police Department.”

WNPD Chief Dale Mabry said that no information was currently available as the case was “still under investigation.”

“It is an active investigation, so I cannot release information at this time,” said Mabry.

LP TAP will stay on the issue and present any police report information as it is made available.
