CALDWELL, NJ - Grover Cleveland Middle School held their 10th Annual Hoopapalooza on Monday, November 19th.

Christine Corliss at the Caldwell-West Caldwell Board of Education commented, “the students and teachers gave thanks for something a little different this year – a basketball win!”

6th to 8th grade students competed against their teachers in a basketball tournament, comprised of three games, one for each grade level.  For the eighth time in ten years, the teachers once again beat out the students.  The only two losing years for the teachers were in 2006 and 2007.

Sixth Grade Math and Science teacher, Ryuichi Saito, advises the tournament’s student committee.   The 3-on-3 competition is open to all 6th through 8th graders and is designed to build upon the strong sense of school spirit already evident.  Over the course of the tournament, different teams from each grade level compete to see who will ultimately play against the faculty.

Corliss explained, “Those who don’t play come to the games armed with signs, T-shirts and cheers for their favorite teams.”

“The event really brings the students together,” said Saito.  “They create their own teams and each team has a mix of both boys and girls playing simultaneously. This year, more than half of the sixth graders participated.”

The competition began on November 12 and built up to the highlight Student-Faculty games played on November 19.  Over 300 parents, faculty and fans came out to applaud their favorite teams.

“Although all teams performed well, the faculty went undefeated,” commented Corliss.

The final scores were as follows:
* Faculty: 31 - 6th Grade Umpa Lumpuz: 6

* Faculty: 27 - 7th Graders: 19

* Faculty: 17 - 8th Graders: 16

“Students really look forward to the competition,” added Saito.  “The gym is packed with students from all grades and groups, supporting one another and cheering.  The cheering is highly encouraged!”
