Professor Sue Gronewold will address the Old Guard on
Being China Literate
Dr. Sue Gronewold, Chair of the History Department, Kean University, will speak to the Old Guard of Summit at its meeting, 10:00 a.m., October 1st, 2013. Her subject will be “On Being China Literate”
Dr. Gronewold will focus on the core knowledge of China Americans should know and understand to be “China literate,” i.e., knowledgeable about Chinese culture and history. As a historian, Dr. Gronewold will describe what ten events in modern Chinese history tell us most about how the Chinese have been shaped by history, how they see the world and how they see their place in it. October 1st (the meeting date) is the day in 1949 that “China stood up” and Chairman Mao Zedong declared the founding of the People’s Republic of China, throwing off the yoke of imperialism and setting an independent path that made all Chinese immensely proud.
All age 50-plus active men are invited to attend the Tuesday morning meetings of the Summit Area Old Guard. Meetings are held at the New Providence Municipal Center, 360 Elkwood Avenue, New Providence.
