Greyhound Rescue Highlights Emergency Preparedness for Pets at Annual Event
Tuesday, November 19, 2013 • 10:54am
Greyhound Friends of New Jersey will hold its 17th Annual Craft Show & Pet Show on November 30th and December 1st at the Westfield Armory 500 Rahway Avenue, Westfield, NJ. Hours are Saturday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Sunday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
“Last year, our event was rescheduled due Sandy and impacted many of our adopters so we decided to hold a special seminar on emergency preparedness for our pets this year on Saturday at 11:00,” Linda Lyman, GFNJ president said, "We welcome back our Presenting Sponsors: NorthStar VETS, Shreiber Animal Foundation Enterprise (SAFE), and Valley Veterinary Hospital. We are grateful to JL Media, Inc., Round Valley Animal Hospital, Ace of Spays, Crown Veterinary Specialists, Garden State Veterinary Specialists, and Red Bank Animal Hospital for their sponsorship. Greyhounds make such wonderful pets and we want everyone to know."
In 2012, when the event was rescheduled due to Hurricane Sandy, GFNJ stepped up by offering help to adopters affected by the storm offering dog sitting, dog food and transportation. Two greyhounds were returned to the group after the owners’ home was destroyed and the family had to move. GFNJ found the dogs a home. This year, a special seminar will be conducted at the Show by GFNJ board member and Responder/Canine Handler with Ocean County's ERC and NJDRCC (Disaster Mental Health Services), Ellen Ganopoulos. The discussion will include events most likely to impact New Jersey residents and their pets, focusing on large breed dogs. How to make a first aid kit at home, advice for sheltering in place as well as at community shelters, keeping pets calm during an event and the dangers pets and pet owners may face after a high-impact weather or disruptive event will be discussed. Hand-outs will be available with resources pet owners may find useful to prepare for before or after an event.
Funds raised at the Show help pay for the care of hundreds of greyhounds before they find homes. Prior to adoption, all dogs are spayed or neutered, receive dental care, heartworm testing and inoculations. The funds also pay for special medical care including orthopedic surgery for greyhounds who break their legs on the track during races. When a greyhound is in dire need, GFNJ is quick to respond. The group knows there’s a loving home for every greyhound.
Visitors to the Show will find an array of vendors offering a wide variety of goodies for people and their pets, a bake sale, and an exciting raffle. Santa will be there to pose for photos with pets. Have lunch in “The Grey Café.” And have your dog's nails clipped. It's a perfect time to pick up holiday gifts for your two or four-legged best friends and help this wonderful cause. Back by popular demand, singer/songwriter Carolyn Messina will entertain our guests with her lovely voice.
Throughout the weekend, people can learn about the joy of owning a retired racing greyhound. And there will be greyhounds available for adoption to pre-approved applicants* at the Show. Interested adopters can go to the GFNJ web site to find out about adoption requirements and see pictures of available greyhounds.
Admission is $6.00 and $5.00 with a coupon available on the group’s home page. Children under 12 are free. And, of course, leashed pets are welcome.
