WEST ORANGE, NJ - The Gregory Elementary School PTA Centennial Committee unveiled their Centennial Logo during a Launch Party on March 20 at Suzy Que's Restaurant in West Orange. Community members, many of whom attended Gregory School themselves, stopped by to support a school that still figures prominently in the happy memories of their childhoods. Current Gregory Principal Michelle Thompson was also there to speak and meet community members that called Gregory home.

Dorrie Cappiello, a West Orange veterinarian, spoke of how she had started attending Gregory in the third grade. "I thought I had died and gone to heaven," she recalled. "I thought, wow, I can wear culottes here!"

Councilman Jerry Guarino, a former Gregory parent, spoke of the special close-knit sense of family that has always been part of Gregory School. He encouraged attendees to reach out to alumni near and far, parents, and families that will soon be making the school their home to participate in the Centennial Celebration.

Centennial Committee co-chairs Catherine Kuzik-Fernandez and Tim Carter unveiled the Centennial Logo, designed by Gregory parent Jonathan Selikoff.  In addition, Peter Schapira, a Gregory alumni from Kuzik-Ferandez' class, donated a centennial logo banner to the school.  Schapira owns Banner deSign in Hillside.

The cornerstone of the plan is the construction of a Centennial Plaza to be located in front of Gregory school. Commemorative engraved pavers containing the names of families, students, staff, and community members, past and present, will be available for a $100 dollar purchase.

Kuzik-Fernandez enthusiastically spoke of her years as a Gregory student, and acknowledged her friends from Gregory (class of 1974) that were there in support . In addition to her friends, Kuzik-Fernandez introduced her mom, "Mrs. Kuzik," who taught at Gregory school for 27 years.

Township Council President Susan McCartney, who was in attendance with her husband Joe, and whose children graduated from Gregory School, was introduced by Victoria Kirsch, Paver Chairperson. Tracey Cassidy, Playground Chairperson, introduced Mayor Robert Parisi.
