WEST ORANGE, NJ - On Wednesday, September 11, the new Fifth Grade Safety Patrol was inducted during a special ceremony at Gregory Elementary School.  Each elementary school  in the West Orange school district recruits responsible students to assist in the safe transport of its younger students to and from their buses each day.

Students accepted into the Safety Patrol must prove themselves to be responsible, kind, hardworking students with good grades.  They are identified by badges or sashes and assigned younger students that they are responsible for all year.  They will help the students get safely from the school bus to their classrooms in the morning and from  their classrooms to the school bus in the afternoon.

Principal Michelle Thompson led the students in their pledge:

I promise to do my best to:

Report for duty on time
Perform my duties faithfully
Always set a good example
Treat others as you would like to be treated
Report dangerous student practices
Obey rules of patrol, school and home
Wear my badge proudly

The Gregory Saftey Patrol keeps kids safe during line up in the AM. Gregory does indoor lineup, and Safety Patrollers stand outside their assigned classroom first thing in the am and then helping the kids in line stay safe and behave well. Kindergarten students line up in the cafeteria and the safety patrol lead them to their class and hand them off to the teacher at the start of school. The teachers rotate responsibility for "bus duty."

Each year, Safety Patrol across the country help to save lives, promote good citizenship, and make themselves, their friends, families and communities proud.
