WEST ORANGE, NJ - Editor's Note: This article was updated on August 28 after Township Engineer advised Tap into West Orange that the start date for the Gregory Avenue road closure had changed to Sept. 15.)

Beginning Sept. 15, Gregory Avenue south of Northfield Avenue will close for water main cleaning and lining. The project is expected to last through Oct. 31 as New Jersey American Water Company cleans and lines water mains along the well-traveled roadway.

The confirmation came from the West Orange Department of Public Works and Engineering after TAP into West Orange saw the information sign stationed on Gregory Avenue stating that the road would close beginning on Sept. 2, and work would be done Monday-Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., The entire stretch of Gregory south of Northfield Avenue to Luddington Avenue will be affected and will remain closed, except for "through traffic" throughout the project's duration.

In an email to Tap into West Orange, Township Engineer Len Lepore said, "Gregory Avenue will be closed.  There will be no access onto it from Northfield Avenue or from South Orange.  Residents on Gregory Avenue will have access to and egress from their homess, but they will need to use the nearest cross street that intersects Gregory Avenue. Residents in other neighborhoods to the east and west of Gregory Avenue will be able to cross Gregory Avenue at Luddington Road, Walker Road, Forest Hill Road and Mitchell Street/Gregory Place.  New Jersey American Water Company is finalizing a brochure and detour plan."

Detours will be created on Rollinson Street, South Valley Road and Ridgewood Road. Residents living on the closed portion of Gregory Ave. will be able to access their homes by using the detours.

According to the NJ American Water Co. website, "Cleaning and lining is the process of removing sediment from inside a water main, then lining the inner surface of the main with cement. This procedure significantly improvesthe reliability of water service, water quality and fire flows in the area. As part of the project, we will also be replacing fire hydrants, valves and any service lines from the main to the curb box that are made of galvanized iron pipe."

West Orange residents are encouraged to plan accordingly for anticipated traffic difficulties.
