CLARK, NJ - Governor Livingston Michael Bamundo talked to the referee before taking his shootout shot against Westfield that turned out to be the game-winner to send the Highlanders into the Union County finals.

"I asked him if I can walk back after he blows the whistle," said Bamundo. "I like to get in a rhythm when I shoot."

And that he did as he smacked it by Westfield senior goal keeper Daniel Lacorte and gave third seeded Governor Livingston a 2-1 shootout victory over the second-seeded Blue Devils at Johnson High School in Clark in the Union County Tournament semi-final game.

The Highlanders will face top-seeded Scotch Plains-Fanwood, who defeated Elizabeth, 1-0, at Kean University on Friday night for the county title.

For most of the game it appeared that Westfield would get another shot at the finals.

The Blue Devils held a 1-0 lead for most of the game and had several chances that either hit the cross bar or were knocked down by the Governor Livingston goal keeper freshman Jacob Topor.

"I saw where they were going in their eyes," said Topor, a freshmen who stopped the last two tries by Westfield in the shootout. "I knew that I had to stay confident and stay positive."

Topor said that being a freshman and heading into the county final game is, "amazing and unbelievable."

Westfield junior Zachary Sheil scored off of a throw-in and kicked the ball in above the shoulder of Topor five minutes into the second half.

With the minutes going by in the second half, it appeared it would be another appearance in the finals for Westfield.

But Governor Livingston forward Anthony Oliveira screamed a shot off his left foot from 25 yards out that he was able to place to the left of Lacorte that tied the game at one with 18 minutes remaining in regulation.

In addition, it gave the Highlanders' offense a shot of vitamin B that extended into the overtime. "It was huge and provided us a great lift," said Bamundo.

In the two, 10-minute overtime sessions, both teams had their chances to end it.

In the shootout most of the kickers had their way against Lacorte and Topor. For Westfield Henry Smith, Sheil, Brett Ripperger and Michael Prosuk scored in the shootout while Governor Livingston's Bamundo, Julian Light, Oliveira and Dylan Weitz would respond.

In the fourth round the keepers had the upper hand as Westfield's Kyle Hall was stopped by Topor while Highlanders Noah Rosenberg hit the crossbar.

And in the sixth round Amakye was stopped by Topor before Bamundo put together his heroics.

For Westfield head coach George Kapner the loss was very hard to swallow considering this is his last season as head coach and his last Union County Tournament game. Kapner has been coaching at Westfield since 1975 and has more than a thousand wins in various sports including boys soccer. He would not comment after the loss.
