Gov. Livingston Softball Victorious Over Unbeaten Metuchen, 7-5

BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - Gov. Livingston softball held off a late game rally attempt to beat undefeated Metuchen, 7-5, Thursday afternoon.
"Today was a very necessary win with this Jekyll and Hyde team we have here. We haven't had consistency, we'll go in and hit the ball well and then we'll disappear for little bit and have a rough one [referring to the recent 3-2 loss against Linden]," said Gov. Livingston head coach Mike Roof.
Gov. Livingston's 7-7 record is deceptive, said Roof. The Lady Highlanders have gone against a strong tough schedule of top 20 teams coming into this Metuchen matchup.
Freshman pitcher Maddie Phillips took the mound and pitched the seven innings for the win. She shook off a first-inning home run by Metuchen pitcher Nicole Camera and held the undefeated team to one run through the fifth.
Carolynne Goldbeck and Kacie Worswick each earned a first inning RBI, driving home Colleen Frank and Alex Foley to take the 2-1 lead.
Taylor Hendrzak led a fourth-inning rally for the Lady Highlanders. The bats continued to swing, loading the bases with line drives by Maddie Phillips and Stephanie Bade.
Foley cracked a deep fly into right field driving in the three runners--immediately followed by a home run by Goldbeck bringing in two for this fourth inning five run frame.
"Today was a day we hit line drives, hit the ball extremely hard at times," said Roof. "We got forced in on a couple of mistakes on Metuchen." With bases loaded, Metuchen's mistakes were critical forcing in multiple runs.
Metuchen, at the top of the seventh, refused to go quietly. Liane Cifrodelli hit a deep left field home run bringing in two runs.
The Lady Highlanders' defense took control to end the inning with an out on first for the 7-5 victory.
