BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ -  From early going, it looked as if it was going to be a defensive struggle for Gov. Livingston softball on Friday as they faced Cranford. A late offensive rally wasn't enough to pull away with the win for the Lady Highlanders, losing, 5-3.

The Cougars struck first, scoring two runs in the first inning with solid hitting from the top of the line-up. The Lady Highlanders escaped the inning as the Cougars left the bases loaded.  The Cougars added three to the tally in the third with three consecutive line drives advancing runners.

Gov. Livingston's Payton Murphy allowed 10 hits pushing five runs across the plate for Cranford. The Lady Highlanders remained scoreless through three innings.

Freshman Maddie Phillips took the mound for Gov. Livingston relieving Murphy.  Alex Foley caught a shallow fly ball and tagged the advanced runner out to start the defensive spark.  Phillips closed the inning with a strike out.

The bats came to life for Gov. Livingston as they cracked back to back hits in the bottom of the fourth.  Alex Foley, Carolynne Goldbeck and Kacie Worswick each hit advancing two runs to score for the Lady Highlanders.

Phillips held the Cougars to two hits and no additional runs. The late come-back was not enough to push the Lady Highlanders past Cranford.

Gov. Livingston will play in Elizabeth on Tuesday, April 15 at 4 p.m.
