BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - The overcast skies did not dampen the spirits or the smiles from shining amid concern that the Gov. Livingston-New Providence softball game on Senior Day would not be played due to predicted inclement weather Thursday.

Both teams came to the Highlander Fields to celebrate the seven GL seniors and one New Providence senior. There were pictures, flowers and proud parents.

Gov. Livingston seniors: Kacie Worswick, Grace Sanzalone, Missy Quinn, Carolynne Goldbeck, Colleen Frank, Caroline Hewett and Payton Murphy.

New Providence senior: Colleen Coleman.

All the excitement from the ceremony quickly turned into motivation for the GL senior girls to finish their high school softball careers strong. After a tough upset in the NJSIAA State Tournament last week, the Highlanders were looking to end the season on a positive note. Coach Mike Roof said, “Anytime you can win on Senior Day that’s obviously a positive.”

After the ceremonies concluded the game began and Senior GL pitcher, Caroline Hewett, proved to be a powerful force that spearheaded the girls to a 3-0 victory in the three-hit shutout.

The field was not the only place where talents prevailed. The GL girls also had an impressive outing at bat.  Taking the lead in the first inning, senior Kacie Worswick hit a RBI single to send home fellow senior Colleen Frank. Senior Carolynne Goldbeck came up to bat in the third inning and hit a double for an RBI to increase the lead to 2-0.  Senior Payton Murphy followed up in the bottom of the 4th hitting a double for a RBI to score GL’s third and final run.  Their combined efforts resulted in a lead that would end the game in a decisive victory.

The seniors left their mark today along with big shoes to fill for the team next year.  With the talent coming up the ranks, they'll go back to work and continue the Highlander softball legacy.
