BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ – In their first game since seeing their undefeated start go by the wayside, the Gov. Livingston girls’ soccer team shutout the Summit Hilltoppers, 2-0, on Tuesday at Gov. Livingston High School.

Senior Lauren Jankowski and sophomore Lindsay DiStaso each scored for the Highlanders, as they improve to 6-1. With the defeat, the Hilltoppers drop to 2-5.

“We talked about taking the next step from the loss,” Gov. Livingston head coach Mike Roof said. “The first half wasn’t us, at halftime we talked about finding our identity and showing it. We didn’t show it in the first half. The second half was what I hope to see for 80 minutes.”

The Highlanders jumped out to the early lead when Jankowski scored on a diagonal volley from the right corner that got passed Summit goalkeeper Callie Humphrey.

It was her team leading fifth goal of the season.

After gaining the 1-0 advantage, the Highlanders lost their intensity, according to GL head coach Mike Roof.  He said his team got sloppy and kept the ball “in the air” too long.

Summit saw themselves with several scoring opportunities on corner kicks, but Highlander goalkeeper Olivia Emanuel kept the Hilltoppers off the board.

Jankowski said it took a little motivation and a “good” talk from Roof to get the team refocused for the second half.

In the final 40 minutes, Jankowski said her team dominated Summit. The Highlanders had at least four scoring chances before DiStaso scored midway into the period. She scored when a deflected pass dropped at her feet inside the box, which she pushed into the right corner of the net.

Ahead 2-0, the Highlanders kept play around midfield for the remainder of the game, running the clock out in their shutout win.

“I think we were way motivated,” Jankowski said. “We were like ‘no more.’ We don’t want to lose anymore.”

The Highlanders return to action on Thursday when they host Oak Knoll.

Summit visits Scotch Plains-Fanwood on Thursday before returning home on Saturday for Hilltopper Day.
