CLARK, N.J. – The Gov. Livingston girls’ basketball team survived a late fourth quarter run by Arthur Johnson High School to beat the Crusaders, 58-49, in double overtime on Tuesday.

Highlander senior Patrice DiTommaso scored a game-high 26 points, including eight in the extra periods to lead GL to their sixth win of the season.

“That’s what we expect out of her all the time,” Gov. Livingston head coach Andy Silvagni said. “We expect smart, intelligent play. She doesn’t have to make every shot she shoots. She just has to be smart and a leader.

GL led the entire way until the game’s final minute when the Crusaders tied with game with 30 seconds left in regulation. The end of the fourth quarter could not come soon enough for the Highlanders.

Gov. Livingston scored only three points in the final eight minutes of play, all coming on free throws in the last two minutes of play.

“I guess we’re young,” Silvagni said. “We’re showing some of our inexperience at some points. We should have closed the game out after the third quarter when we were up 10 and we didn’t. Offensively we have some issues and we made it hard on ourselves.”

The Highlanders trailed by as many as four in the first overtime before DiTommaso hit a deep 3-pointer with eight seconds left to send the game into another overtime. She scored all eight points in the first extra period.

In the second session, GL connected on four of their first six possessions, while allowing only one Crusader point. Highlander junior Hayley Berliner hit two layups in the final two minutes to ice the victory.

“She’s been saving our lives,” Silvagni said.  “Without Hayley…recently she’s been picking up the slacks. She makes plays; she’s a play maker.”

Gov. Livingston returns to action on Thursday when the Highlanders host Cranford.
