BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - Gov. Livingston High School Field Hockey teamed with the PAL offering a one day field hockey camp last Saturday at Snyder Avenue Park.  The camp introduced proper stick handling and basic rules of the game in a positive environment.

The PAL field hockey program is in its first year led by Eva Ostrowski,  PAL Field Hockey Chairman. The program was started by Ostrowski due to the limited opportunities offered in the sport.  Ostowski wants to make the sport more accessible for young girls.

All three GL teams helped out, including Coaches Mirabella, DeLauro, and Detore. They were very energetic and made the time enjoyable for everyone involved.

To start off the day, the girls split up by grade and played games, warming up to a game of  duck, duck, goose.

Fundamental stick handling was taught, showing the girls stances and how to maneuver plays while keeping the stick low. They played games like monkey in the middle, red light green light and worked on drills using  dribbling, passing and shooting skills.

"I started playing field hockey when i was young and starting a field hockey program with the younger kids is such a great idea because it is an amazing sport," said GL varsity goalie Molly Heissler

Local players aren’t seeing the sport until sixth grade or later. Introducing them to the basics early on will allow them to develop more advanced skills. The goal of the camp is to get young players hooked through the PAL program.

"We always try to do team bonding things and invite younger girls. It (field hockey) is a really great way to start the school year and it is a really great thing to get involved in," said Nicole Demarco, a varsity center defender.
