BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - Garrett O'Connor scored two goals in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough as the Highlanders fell to Old Bridge, 8-5, at their rain soaked home opener on Saturday.

Coach Chet Parlavecchio's home opener didn't go as well as he would have liked. "We need to work on ground balls, fundamentals. -- They were fundamentally better than us today and they won." said Parlavecchio. "50/50 games like this come down to fundamentals -- they caught the ground ball better than us."

Old Bridge came out and scored four goals during the opening quarter and held onto the lead throughout the game.

GL senior Alex Lipnick silenced the Knights' streak with two goals in the second quarter to trim the score to 4-2.

With the Vikings controlling possession in the third quarter, they got past Highlander defense to extend their lead to 7-2.

The weather started to impact the game as players slipped and dropped critical balls, missing opportunities for the Highlanders.

GL junior Brian Hutton led a fourth quarter comeback with a goal in front of the crease.  O'Connor added two more to bring the Highlanders within three.   With a few missed opportunities in the final minutes, the Highlanders' fourth quarter surge was too late to get by the Vikings.

"We need to possess more offense," said senior Garrett O'Connor. "We're taking it to the next team we play -- we'll look to improve in the season and forget about this loss."

The Highlanders will host Newark East Side on Tuesday, April 1 at 4 p.m.
