BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - Gov. Livingston's varsity boys basketball home opener is Friday, Dec. 20 against Scotch Plains. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
"The coaching staff has been looking forward to this season for quite some time now and we can't wait to see how we measure up against the rest of Union County," said Gov. Livingston assistant coach Joe Reel.
"This is a team full of self-motivated young men who just really want to win after losing so many close games last year," said Reel. Losing both match-ups by three points last season, the Highlanders look to redeem a win on Friday night against the Raiders. "Improving our turnover numbers is a must," said head coach Steve Petruzzelli.
"Last year was a tough year with a lot of close losses, but we have a lot of returning players this season and all the right pieces to have a very successful year," said senior Nick Disarno.
Petruzzelli started two sophomores and a freshman last season. With experience gained, Petruzzelli looks to returning starters junior Rob Imbalzanno (6' 7), junior Chris Marzo (5' 11) and sophomore Javon Reis-wilson (5'7) to build a winning team.
Returning senior starters and squad captains Victor Candeloro (6'1) and Pat Mahoney (5'11) will provide outstanding leadership, said Petruzzelli.
New to the varsity squad juniors John Wills (6'3) and John Iorio (6'4), are expected to play a significant role on the team. Wills coming off a football injury will be key, especially rebounding wise said Petruzzelli.
"With this group, we do not have to coach effort or motivate our guys to play hard every day. They already do that. As a staff, we have been able to focus on getting better every day. I'd put Coach Petruzzelli up against pretty much any coach in the state. Their tremendous attitude has trickled down to the JV and freshman levels," said Reel.
