Goow v. Akhtaruzzaman Ruling Delayed Until Wednesday

PATERSON, NJ - Superior Court Judge Thomas Brogan has delayed his ruling on Aslon Goow's bid to have Councilman Mohammed Akhtaruzzaman removed from office until next Wednesday. Brogan had been scheduled to render his decision in the case at 2 pm today.
Instead, the ruling will be given on Wednesday at 2 pm, according to one of the judge's staff members. The delay apparently stemmed from a scheduling issue and nothing involving the substance of the case.
Goow, a 12-year incumbent who lost to Akhtaruzzaman in this year's 2nd Ward council election, has argued his opponent did not live in Paterson for a year before the election, as required by law. Goow's attorney, Michael DeMarco, used various documents to make that case, including Akhtaruzzaman's application for disaster relief in September 2011 that listed his address as being in Totowa.
Akhtaruzzaman has testified that he moved from Totowa to Paterson in January 2011, leaving his family behind for six months. Akhtaruzzaman has said the Totowa address on the emergency relief application resulted from a misunderstanding.
