BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ -  District principals shared results of School Performance Reports at a recent Board of Education Meeting.

The principals saw improved performance in both Math and Science, however performance was not as strong in Language Arts (LA).  It was identified that challenges exist with downward trends in LA "Advanced Proficient" scores on the NJASK tests along with the gap between "Advanced Proficient" scores in Math versus LA.

  • A number of Language Arts remediation activities are taking place: 6th grade qualified LA teachers in place; additional students and time in Instructional Review; resources dedicated to improving LA curriculum and more focused approach with reading specialists.
  • Principals talked about the need/focus on individual student learner and increasing his/her score(s).
  • Peer Percentile is an important component of the performance reports and the Principals commented how their entire peer group was not always representative of their school.

Superintendent Judy Rattner said that a combination of District Factor Group (DFG) and Peer Percentile would likely be the best comparison for Student Achievement. It was determined that the district will identify the 10 to 15 best measures of student achievement and report to the Board [and the public] on a going forward basis.

The Board approved a Girls Volley Program for Gov. Livingston with the agreement that the program will abide by the current board policy which involves parent funding for the first few years.

PARCC Field Testing was completed at all of the schools, lessons have been learned in advance of the full rollout next year

Teachers of the Year were announced – Christine Talarico, GLHS; Emily Sena, CMS; Karen Stollen, Hughes; Stacey Saravay, Mountain Park; Sean Waller, Woodruff; Carol Sangiovanni, ECC

The next BOE meeting is on Thursday, April 24 at 8 p.m.
