Tuesday, May 6, 2014 • 1:28pm
SPARTA, NJ- The Girls on the Run New Jersey North 5k and Sparta Recreation Lake Mohawk 8 Mile Challenge are set for Saturday, May 17 at 8 a.m. The race is a fun, family friendly event with a DJ, post race refreshments, cheer zones as well as t-shirts and goodie bags for participants while supplies last.
Both races welcome all ages. The start and end lines are at Arrowhead Trail. The Girls on the Run North Jersey 5K follows a scenic out and back route that takes participants along both West Shore Trail and East Shore Trail of Lake Mohawk. This moderate race encourages both runners and walkers alike to come and enjoy the day.
The more rigorous Lake Mohawk Challenge will take the traditional route up West Shore Trail and will continue for 8.2 miles around beautiful Lake Mohawk. It ends back at Arrowhead Trail.
Both races are open to the public and registration is now open at register.compuscore.com.
Girls on the Run NJ North is pleased to offer additional medals in more categories as well as trophies for the top team. Also new this year, The Grill at Lake Mohawk Country Club will have food and refreshments available for purchase during the race. The chefs will be serving up tasty selections for both runners and spectators to enjoy. Look for them near the West Shore Trail entrance to the Country Club.
The 5k will be a celebratory event for the more than 200 girls participating in the program. The 10-week Girls on the Run program provides a supportive atmosphere where girls have the opportunity to think critically, make informed decisions and become healthy and engaged individuals who positively contribute to society as a whole. By working towards and attaining a goal at such a young age, the girls learn that they can achieve anything. Girls on the Run New Jersey North serves girls in Sussex, Bergen, Hudson and Passaic counties, and is one of over 200 chapters across the United States.
"This event is unique because the girls choose a running buddy who supports, encourages and trains with them throughout the 10 week program. These running buddies are parents, siblings, teachers or family friends. For some of them, this is their first 5k as well,” said executive director, Deb Siipola. “To be part of a memory like that is an incredible honor that none of us take lightly. To be able to include the community in that memory makes it all the more amazing.”
The day will be a true community wide event and Girls on the Run New Jersey North® is grateful for the support they have received from their sponsors.
