NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - A Garwood man has been charged with burglary and theft for the break-in of a car in front of a resident's home on Sagamore Drive.

Shortly before 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday, the New Providence Police Department received a 9-1-1 call of a motor vehicle burglary in progress on Sagamore Drive. The caller reported that she was awakened by the sound of her vehicle’s door opening and closing. She reported that when she looked out her window, she observed a male in her vehicle. Patrols responded and arrived in the area in less than one minute of the call. During their investigation a bicycle was located in close proximity to the location of the vehicle and patrols began to canvass the area.

While patrols were canvassing the area, a suspect was located hiding in the landscaping of a residence on Southgate Road. After an investigation, Patrolman Joseph DiParisi arrested Tony Speranza, 29, of Garwood.

It is believed that Speranza may have committed other motor vehicle burglaries in New Providence during the early morning hours of July 23. Residents of the Murray Hill area are being asked to contact the New Providence Police Department if they believe they were the victim of a motor vehicle burglary during the overnight hours of July 23, or if they have additional information.
