WEST ORANGE, NJ - The Gaelen Gallery East at JCC MetroWest, located at 760 Northfield Avenue, will open the fall art season on Sunday, September 7, from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm with their exhibit "Berlin-Shanghai-America: The Multiple Lives of John Less."  Following the opening celebration, poets Timothy Liu, Frank Nicolletti, Peggy Vassallo, Barbara Wind and others will pay tribute to Less in written works describing his life, trials and achievements both in art and his personal life.

Born in Berlin, Less fled Nazi persecution in 1940 and found refuge in a ghetto for stateless Jewish refugees in Shanghai. It was here that he honed his art and worked for major advertising studios in the area. He immigrated to the United States in 1947. He then became a graphic designer for Bamberger's in Newark, NJ, and rose through the ranks to become Vice President and Creative Director for Graphics and Broadcasting until his retirement in 1982.  He continued to freelance for the next ten years, producing commercial art for major retailers.

Less describes his works by noting, “My paintings share impressions of what I have observed. Instead of supplying explanations which retroactively impact on how my works are perceived, I prefer unfiltered visual engagement with viewers. My aim is to induce an emotional experience and cognitive process based on what touched me. Ideally, viewers will be moved to find their own personally meaningful interpretations of what I attempted to communicate through content, color, and form."

Gaelen Galley East is located on the Cooperman JCC’s mezzanine level and hours are Monday through Thursday and Sunday, 9:00am-9:00pm; Friday, 9:00am-6:00pm; closed Saturday. Contact Lisa Suss at 973–530–3413 (lsuss@jccmetrowest.org) for more information.
