FSPY Swimmers Break Seven Team Records

SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- The Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA (“FSPY”) swim team competed in the YMCA Short Course National Championship Meet at the Greensboro Aquatics Center from April 8-11, 2014. A total of 217 teams from across the country competed at the meet, with Fanwood Scotch Plains finishing 43rd.
In individual events, Sarah Cronin finished eighth in the 100 free (50.97) and ninth in the 200 free (1:49.37) , breaking team records in both events. Fourteen year old Monika Burzynski set team age group records in the 100 fly (56.92), and the 200 back (2:07.03) . Joining Cronin and Burzynski on the 400 freestyle relay were Amanda Banasiak and Sarah Davis. Earning team points (top 16), this relay set a new team record (3:27.32), finishing 14th overall. Through their contributions on this relay, Banasiak and Burzynski earned the coveted black FSPY swim cap which is worn only at national championship finals.
Also in individual events Joe Baron completed his Short Course career at FSPY in grand style, swimming a personal best in 50 freestyle (21:26) and donning the black cap in the ‘C’ finals. Joe anchored the 200 and 400 Medley relay events with fellow team members Alex Skoog, Aidan Donadio and Tyler Lessner which set team records of 1:35.23 and 3:28.42 respectively.
Participating at their first YMCA Short Course National Championship meet were Amanda Banasiak, Eric Chang, Greg James, Isabella Iacona, Rachel Maizes , Dan Myers, and Julie Stankiewicz. Coach Chris Karelus was proud of the efforts of his departing seniors, glad that they were able to compete so effectively at their last Short Course National Championship meet and looks forward to the contributions of the team as they begin their spring and summer Long Course season.
