FANWOOD-SCOTCH PLAINS – The Fanwood Scotch Plains YMCA Performing Arts Program hosted “An Afternoon of Performing Arts with Friends” on December 2nd. It was an exciting way to introduce the performing arts program to the community. There were performances by the Y’s Dance Company, a group of dancers age 7 to 12. The Scotch Plains Fanwood High School students displayed artwork, and local craft artists had many lovely items for sale. Food was provided by local restaurants and there were door prizes.
Jenny Logus, the Performing Arts Program Coordinator, said “we are very excited about embracing the arts. We are an arts-friendly YMCA.” Ms. Logus has a background in dance and is the artistic and administrative director of the Broadway Dance Center in New York City. She is a resident of Scotch Plains and is one of the instructors at the YMCA along with Macada Brandl, who is the Director of New Jersey Dance and lives in Scotch Plains.
Ms. Logus and Sheri Cognetti, the Senior Program Director at the YMCA, spoke to The Alternative Press about the new program and the many things it has to offer its members and the community. For example, the YMCA will be offering group band programs. There will also be fine art classes and the New Jersey Youth Theatre (NJYT) will develop a drama component. The YMCA added a wing to their building and this new space has allowed the program to expand and broaden the dance and music classes.
The YMCA Performing Arts Program plans on continuing to give free concerts. There will be a spring event that will coincide with National Dance Week in April. Invitations will be extended to other performers and arts programs, as the YMCA continues to bring the best in the arts to our community.
The Y is the nation’s leading nonprofit committed to strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
