Black Friday isn’t just for retailers any more. On Friday November 29 - the day after Thanksgiving - Friends of the Livingston Library (FOTLL) will have its own “Black Friday Sale.” Adult hard cover and soft cover fiction books - romance, mystery/thriller, science fiction, and general fiction - will be on a one day sale at $0.25 each. In addition, the sale will offer a selection of dime books.
The one-day sale will run on the “honor system” where patrons select their books and pay at the cash box. FOTLL volunteers will be at the site periodically to check on the status of the inventory, replenishing sale inventory as necessary.
Other items at the Ongoing Sale are at their everyday low prices:
$1.00 for hard cover adult non-fiction, $.50 for soft cover adult non-fiction
$.50 for Children’s hard cover books, and $.25 for Children’s soft cover books
DVDs for $2.00 and $.25 for other non-print media
Coffee Table books for $3.00
The inventory at the ongoing sale is entirely NEW since October’s BookFEST! when FOTLL offered patrons close to 10,000 items. While the vast majority of books were sold, those remaining after BookFEST! were either donated to other organizations or sent for bulk sale. This year Friends sent a selection of hard cover books to a nearby senior living community and the VA Hospital in East Orange. Many paperback books were donated to the Essex County Corrections Department. Other hard cover books were sent to a social enterprise organization for sale, with FOTLL receiving a percentage of those sales.
The books sold by FOTLL come primarily through donations. Board member Teresa Allard says, “We are thrilled that the community supports us through their donations.” With BookFEST! over, Friends has restarted its ongoing book sale. Board Secretary Sue Cone explains, “We are now in need of new donations to replenish the stock we sold. We are in want of gently used children’s books and adult non-fiction in all categories including arts, cooking, humor, history, biography, travel, sports, self-help, business, etc.”
FOTLL also seeks donations of adult fiction books, board games, electronic games, puzzles, audio books on CD, CDs, and DVDs. Unfortunately, VHS tapes, cassettes, text books, encyclopedias, or magazines are not accepted. Donations can be deposited at the Friends Desk in the Library lobby anytime the Library is open. Donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
The book sales — both the annual BookFEST! and the ongoing sale — are a “win-win” for FOTLL and the library patrons. FOTLL raises funds that are then donated to the Livingston Library to support programming and supplement book acquisitions. Sale patrons are able to find recently published books as well as older out-of-print editions at very low prices.
