LIVINGSTON, NJ - As part of its fifth annual spring benefit, A Taste of the World, to be held on Thursday, April 24, the Friends of Livingston Library announced new silent auctions and raffle items for those with a taste for the world of sports. A featured item is a 16x20 autographed photo of Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees.

Friends Board member Teresa Allard explained, “With this being the end of Jeter’s career, we thought fans would like a piece of Yankee history.” Allard added that “Friends is starting the bidding at half the estimated retail value of $1,099, so we think it is accessible for a baseball devotee.”

Also for auction are an 8x10 dual-autographed photo of Bobby Thompson with Ralph Brake when he hit the “Shot Heard Round the World” and an 16x20 autographed color photo featuring Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan in an exciting jump shot along with some very extensive collections of trading cards.

Allard said, “If going to the game is more your style, we have four tickets to a Devils game and two tickets to a Yankees-Astros game. For those who prefer to be active, we are offering a six-month complimentary adult membership to the YMCA of West Essex.”

Allard also added, “Our items for those with a taste for the arts is also growing.” Friends has a signed photo of Tony Danza in Honeymoon in Vegas during its pre-Broadway run at the Paper Mill Playhouse, along with the show’s poster and cast-signed posters and playbills from shows featuring Lynn Redgrave, Kelli O'Hara, Joel Grey, Chita Rivera, and Sutton Foster.

“We are very excited by our ticket offerings as well,” Allard said, noting the availability of tickets for the Paper Mill Playhouse production of Can-Can and productions at the Shakespeare Theater of New Jersey in Madison, the Bickford Theater in Morristown, and productions at the Roundabout Theatre, Manhattan Theatre Club, and Shakespeare in the Park, all in New York City.

Tickets for the Sunday April 27 concert and the Sunday June 8 concert of the Baroque Orchestra of New Jersey at Dolan Hall at the College of Saint Elizabeth in Morristown are also being offered. The April concert features Beethoven and a premiere of a symphony by Maestro Robert Butts, the Orchestra’s Music Director. The June concert features music of Rossini and Mendelssohn. Library patrons, familiar with Dr. Butts from his lectures and presentations at the Library, may also have a chance to meet him at the benefit.

Dozens of retail gift certificates, service gift certificates, and merchandise items valued at over $6,000 will bringone's taste of the world closer to home. The list of available prizes continues to grow. If a person wants to define his/her own world to explore, winnings from the Take A Chance on the Library 50/50 cash raffle may make a sizable contribution to funding that dream. Tickets for the raffle may be purchased independent of the Spring Benefit and the winner does not need to be present on April 24 when the winner will be announced.

For a taste of the world through food and wine, the event will feature an assortment of food celebrating international flavors, dozens of wines from around the world and a selection of craft beers. Wine experts will provide tastings, be available to answer questions, and take sales orders.

Net proceeds of the event will support the Friends' work at the Livingston Library. Friends sponsors the Library’s Children’s & Teens’ Summer Reading Program which registers over 900 youth each year and other youth programming. In addition, Friends sponsor several series designed for all ages including Music Matters, Think Theatre, Literary Liaisons, and Lifelong Learning Lectures and other services not covered by the Library’s budget from the Township including the Museum Pass Program and the E-Reader Experience. Through funding for the additions to the Library collection and the programs, Friends also helps the adults and children of the community continually discover new worlds.
