WESTFIELD, NJ — Updated.

In Cranford, a voluntary evacuation of floodplain areas was issued by the Cranford Office of Emergency Management at 10 p.m. Wednesday night.

TAP received reports of multiple road closures Wednesday evening. On Massachusetts St, a reader reported 7" of water. In Scotch Plains, Lambert's Mill Road, West Broad Street and Route 22 West  were closed. Route 22 West was also closed at New Providence road, according to Google Maps.

The National Weather Service issued a flood warning in Union County until 12 p.m. Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service, rainfall rates are ½ to 1 inch per hour and even higher rates were possible.  Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall caused elevated levels on small creeks and streams and ponding of water in urban areas, highways, streets, underpasses and other poor drainage areas and low-lying spots.

The service warns people not to drive vehicles into areas where water covers the roadway, as the depth may be too great to allow cars to cross safely.
