FANWOOD, NJ -- IVY Educational Services will host an informational meeting about its FlexSchool alternative education options at 250 South Ave. in Fanwood on Sunday, June 8, from 7 to 9 p.m.

FlexSchool is designed for students ages 11 to 18 who feel they are not getting what they need from their current schools. The goal, its founders say, is to encourage critical thinking and creativity for students, while allowing time for enrichment. The program offers a shorter school day that covers all essentials in depth and allows time to pursue a passion in the afternoon.

The Fanwood-based FlexSchool is designed for unique thinkers who are not served in traditional schools. Students will study a curriculum based on the Common Core but designed by tutors in order to pursue academic passions in depth.  IVY Educational develops a customized curriculum centered on critical thinking and intellectual curiosity for each student.  It attracts students from Scotch Plains-Fanwood, Westfield, Clark, Cranford, New Providence, Berkeley Heights, Plainfield, and other nearby towns.

At the FlexSchool in Bernardsville, athletes, artists, musicians, and other students who want to pursue a passion or have primary interests outside of school are encouraged to apply.  The program offers a hybrid online and in-person, NCAA-approved school.

“FlexSchool is intended for students who are not getting what they need from public and private schools, either because traditional school gets in the way of an overriding passion (athletics, arts, etc.) or because there just isn’t a good fit between the student and traditional schools,” explained Nicole Oringer, partner of IVY Educational Services. “We hope to continue their mission to inspire a love of learning for students who want to take academic risks, be creative, and grow into independent, flexible citizens.”

FlexSchool requires pre-admission testing, parent and student interviews, and a full-day, full-immersion workshop so both the school and the student can determine if the fit will be a good one.

“There will be ample opportunity for social interaction in our school day. Most of our students will have other activities that provide a good social outlet,” explained Jacqui Byrne, partner and head of curriculum tutoring. “The mission of FlexSchool is to make school work for everyone.”
