SUMMIT, NJ - Matt Fischetti scored a three-goal Hat Trick, and goalie Sam Bebout made a massive save with 14 seconds remaining in the game, as the Summit High School Boys Varsity Lacrosse Team improved to 9-1 on the season with a 4-3 victory over Westfield.
After Riley Flynn scored to put the Hilltoppers up 1-0, it looked like the goal would give Summit the lead at halftime, but the Blue Devils scored with 16 seconds left in the second quarter, the rare 1-1 score line at the break indicative of the grinding, physical nature of the game.
Fischetti's first goal made it 2-1, but Westfield equalized to send the game to the final period deadlocked at two apiece.
Fischetti scored twice in the fourth, both goals coming after extended Hilltoppers possessions that culminated in bulldozing drives to the goal. At 4-2 with less four minutes to go and control of the ball, it looked like Summit would run out the clock, but a turnover and a Westfield goal with 27 seconds remaining set up a frantic finish.
The Blue Devils gained possession with just under 20 seconds to play, and Bebout went low to his right to deny a shot that would have sent the game into overtime. The ball caromed behind the cage and a scrum ensued, with Summit emerging with the ball, heaving it down field and the final horn sounding.
While it may not have been a masterpiece to watch, the contest, which Summit Head Coach Jim Davidson called "a typical Summit/Westfield game," did not lack for tension or emotion.
"We know they have an explosive attack, so we wanted to control the ball, play deliberate on offense," said Davidson. Of the final, frenetic 60 seconds, Davidson said, "We needed to secure the ball at the end and it didn't happen."
Summit next travels to Mahwah April 24 for a 4:30 face-off, before returning home to face Mendham April 26 at Investors Bank Field. Start time is set for 11 a.m.
