WEST ORANGE, NJ - The Brendan Tevlin Lacrosse Festival will be held on Saturday, August 2, from 10:00 am - 3:00 pm at Seton Hall Prep's Athletic Field, 700 Prospect Avenue, in West Orange. The event has been organized by friends Rich Shahpazian and Mike Muha and a host of Tevlin's SHP friends.
Brendan Tevlin, 19, was shot multiple times and fatally wounded at the corner of Walker Road and Northfield Avenue on June 25. He was a resident of Livingston and visiting friends in West Orange when the incident occurred. The investigation is ongoing.
Tevlin had just completed his first year of studies at the University of Virginia. Among his many interests were surfing, playing the bagpipes, and Lacrosse. He was a LAX player at The Prep, graduating in 2013, and Shahpazian and Muha got the idea to honor their fallen friend after conversations they had had with Tevlin in June about a LAX pickup game.
In five weeks 116 players have signed up to play and there are 227 non-playing registrations. The boys, with the help of Seton Hall Prep Assistant Headmaster Mike Gallo and Athletic Director Larry Baggit, and several other volunteers, have organized games based on players' position preferences. Registration begins at 10:00 am and the games begin at 11:00. Players are asked to donate $20 to play, and non-players $10, with proceeds going to the Tevlin family.
Following the Lacrosse Festival, the Shillelagh Club, located at 648 Prospect Avenue, will hold a barbecue organized by Noel O'Keefe and other members of the club. Brendan played bagpipes with the Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh Bagpipers.
The events will be held rain or shine.
