WESTFIELD, NJ — A house fire at 686 Westfield Ave. on Saturday, Jan. 4, was contained to the room of origin and under control within 15 minutes of the Westfield Fire Department’s arrival on the scene at 1:58 p.m., according to Chief Daniel Kelly of the Westfield Fire Department.

“The fire was in the basement in the area of the oil burner. It was determined that it was accidental in nature,” said Kelly. “The resident of the home was treated by the Westfield Volunteer Rescue Squad on the scene and was released and is staying with a family member in a neighboring town.”

Westfield firefighters received assistance from the Cranford Fire Department. Union County Hazardous Materials responded to contain the home heating oil.
