Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA Kicks off Competitive Gymnastics Season

The months of practice have finally led to the start of the competitive season for the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA Gymnastics Teams.  Competing in their first meet of the season, the ‘A’ and ‘B’ Division teams hosted teams from South Mountain and Somerset Valley YMCAs. 

Four gymnasts from the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA competed in the A Division competition.  Lauren Lockfeld earned 1st place All Around.  Lockfeld also placed 1st on Floor Exercise, 2nd on Uneven Bars and Balance Beam and 3rd on Vault.  Second place All Around was awarded to Kacie Bumiller.  Bumiller captured 1st place on Vault and Uneven Bars and 2nd place on Balance Beam.  Third place All Around honors were awarded to Abby Fontana.  Fontana also received 1st place on Floor Exercise, tying with her teammate, 2nd place on Vault and 3rd place on the Uneven Bars.  Marissa DiBella’s was awarded 3rd place on Balance Beam.

The ‘B’ Division gymnasts competed in two age groups and saw 6 gymnasts from the Fanwood Scotch Plains YMCA competing in their first B Division meet:  Ava McKenzie, Lenore Ferguson, Anna Decker, Rachel Tang, Paige Hoblitzell and Anya Szewczuk.  These rookies all performed well and show great promise in the coming season. 

In the 12 and under age group, Ava McKenzie, received 1st place All Around.   McKenzie also was awarded 1st place on Vault, Balance Beam and Floor Exercise and 2nd place on the Uneven Bars.  Anna Decker earned 3rd place All Around backed up by 1st place on Uneven Bars and 3rd on Vault.  Lenore Ferguson competed in 3 events, earning 2nd place on Vault and 3rd on both Balance Beam and Floor Exercise.

Competing in the 13 and over age group, Kristy Cerini enjoyed a great meet capturing 1st place All Around.  Cerini also earned 1st place on Uneven Bars, 2nd on Vault and Balance Beam and 3rd on Floor Exercise.  The was a tie for 2nd place All Around – Rachel Tang and Abby Kennedy.  Kennedy also received 1st place on both Vault and Floor Exercise; Tang placed 2nd on Uneven Bars and 3rd on Balance Beam.  Anya Szewczuk placed 4th on Balance Beam.  Paige Hoblitzell rounded out the team’s 13 and over contingent.

The next home meet will be a ‘C’ Division meet on Saturday, Jan. 25.
