FANWOOD/SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ - Nearly a foot of snow fell on Fanwood and Scotch Plains Tuesday from the latest snowstorm in what has become a difficult weather winter for Union County residents.

District schools are closed on Wednesday, and the following closures and delayed openings should also be noted:

The JCC of Central NJ’s preschool and kindergarten are cancelled. The JCC plans to open at noon.

The Union County court system is closed.

Union County College will have a delayed opening. College opens at 9:30 a.m. Classes resume at 10 a.m.

"Our Department of Public Works has been out all night clearing our roads and they continue to do so," said Fanwood Mayor Colleen Mahr. "Everyone is urged to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary."

The Chelsea Senior Living residence at 295 South Ave. is a designated warming station. Anyone in immediate need of warmth may go there. Bring any medications or other necessities. Fanwood Police will arrange transportation. Contact them at (908) 322-5000.

Residents are urged to park off-street wherever possible to facilitate plowing.

Those shoveling should also take extra caution not to overexert themselves and to take breaks, even though this snow is of the very light, dry and fluffy consistency that makes it somewhat easier to shovel than heavy, wet snow. The temperatures on Wednesday morning were hovering just slightly above zero degrees, and no significant warming trend is forecast anytime in the immediate future, with single-digit readings the forecast for the next several nights and daytime temperatures not expected to exceed 20 degrees before Saturday.
