Fanwood Poetry Series Celebrates 15th Anniversary with Reading by Mark Doty, Winner of National Book Award, Dec. 10

 

FANWOOD, NJ – The Carriage House Poetry Series invites the public to attend a free event on Tuesday, December 10, at 8:00 p.m. in the Kuran Arts Center on Watson Road, off North Martine Avenue, adjacent to Fanwood Borough Hall. (GPS use 75 N. Martine Avenue.) The scheduled event will celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Carriage House Poetry Series with music and words featuring distinguished poet Mark Doty and composer/lyricist Brian Celardo.

Mark Doty is one of the most distinguished and popular poets in the United States. He is the author of numerous collections of poetry, most recently Fire to Fire: New and Selected Poems (Harper Collins), which won the National Book Award. Other collections include School of the Arts (2005); Source (2002); Sweet Machine (1998); Atlantis (1995); and My Alexandria (1993), which won the National Book Critics Circle Award and Britain's T. S. Eliot Prize, and also was a National Book Award finalist.

Among numerous other honors and awards, Mr. Doty has received fellowships from the Guggenheim, Ingram Merrill, Rockefeller, and Whiting foundations and from the National Endowment for the Arts. He was elected an Academy of American Poets Chancellor in 2011.

 

Mr. Doty graduated from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, and received his Master of Fine Arts degree in creative writing from Goddard College in Plainfield, Vermont. He has taught at the University of Iowa, Princeton University, Sarah Lawrence College, Columbia University, Cornell and NYU. He was the John and Rebecca Moores Professor in the graduate program at the University of Houston Creative Writing Program for ten years.

 

Mark Doty is currently Distinguished Professor and Writer-in-Residence in the Department of English at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, where he directs Writers House.

 

The Carriage House Series was established on Dec. 10, 1998, by Adele Kenny, Fanwood’s Poet Laureate. The series is home-based in the Patricia M. Kuran Arts Center, an historic Gothic Revival structure that was once a 19th century carriage house, hence the name of the series.
