RED BANK, NJ - At the stroke of midnight on Monday night into Tuesday morning,  Fanwood Mayor Collen Mahr was part of history when she conducted one of the first same-sex marriages in New Jersey for her friend, Red Bank Councilman Ed Zipprich, and his partner NP Micolaides.

This was after Gov. Chris Christie withdrew his plans to challenge the law in court, after it was determined that the appeal was “unlikely to prevail.”

Because Mahr performed a Civil Union ceremony for Red Bank Councilman Ed Zipprich and his partner JP Nicolaides in 2011, she was asked to come and perform the marriage ceremony. While she was there, the councilman asked that Mahr to also officiate the marriage of his friends, Laura and Marlee, who have been together for 17 years, first entering into a domestic partnership, civil union and now marriage.

"As a New Jersey mayor who supports equality for everyone, I was honored to be a witness to history by performing the marriage of my good friends Red Bank Councilman Ed Zipprich and JP Nicolaides as well as Red Bank residents Laura and Marlee at the stroke of midnight," Mahr said.

"Very few times do we get to bear witness to history, and this will forever be known as a historic day regarding civil rights in the state of New Jersey,” Mahr said.  “It was a beautiful ceremony that showed you are now free to marry who you love in the state of New Jersey.”
