FANWOOD, NJ – The Fanwood mayor and Borough Council held an agenda meeting Tuesday night, as another winter storm was approaching the area. The amount of salt the borough has left has become a concern.

“We will have gone through five winter storms in a row, within a month," said Councilman Tom Kranz. "It's extraordinary for us, and the winter is only half over." The eight-man Department of Public Works has been working non-stop. “It's pretty amazing that they keep going and going," Kranz said.

Councilwoman Kathy Mitchell mentioned that more snow and freezing rain was on the way and asked if the borough had enough salt for the roads.

Mayor Colleen Mahr said that there is enough salt for the next 24 hours, and that every town in the area is low on salt. “Two orders have been placed and we are waiting for the shipments,” Mahr said. Another potentially bigger snowstorm is in the forecast for the end of this weekend.

“It's good that they did such a nice job on the roads on this past storm," Councilman Russ Huegel said. "The sun hit the blacktop and the snow all melted away. You benefit from staying on top of it.”

Other topics that were discussed at the agenda meeting included the Recreation Commission, which will ask the council for money from the capitol budget to repair the LaGrande Park tennis courts. They also will be submitting a grant application for the Forest Road tennis courts and asking the council to match the grant.

The Recreation Commission is going to be asking for the council to vote to move forward with a proposed designer for the skateboard park in Forest Road Park. “The time frame that they have (for the construction of the park) is pretty exciting," said Councilman Kevin Boris. "It's very compact. They think that August 14 of 2014 is the targeted opening date.”
