SCOTCH PLAINS-FANWOOD, NJ -- Members of both the Scotch Plains and Fanwood Police Departments will be sending officers to represent the towns at the funeral of slain Jersey City Patrolman Melvin Santiago on Friday, July 18th.

The 23-year-old rookie police officer was fatally shot while responding to a report of an armed robbery at a 24-hour pharmacy. The suspect, who was killed by Jersey City police in an armed exchange, had taken a gun from the security guard at the pharmacy and waited for police to arrive before shooting Santiago.

Santiago's murder hit close to home for Fanwood Police Chief Richard Trigo, who grew up not far from the area where the shooting took place and who attended high school and college in Jersey City.

"I would like to invite the residents  to participate in SHINE YOUR PORCH LIGHT FOR OFFICER MELVIN SANTIAGO to honor this young officer. Please turn on your porch lamp on this Friday evening in his memory," Trigo said. "It's important for us as fellow police officers and as a community to recognize the ultimate sacrifice paid by Officer Santiago in the line of duty."
