SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ – After much worrying about the weather, Scotch Plains and Fanwood experienced the perfect Memorial Day Weekend, starting with the first annual Tribute Concert for Fallen Heroes that was held on Sunday evening.
Over 600 residents came out to hear the Westfield Community Band perform a selection of patriotic music interspersed with readings of letters from fallen soldiers. “It really could not have been a more perfect evening,” said Fanwood Mayor Colleen Mahr. “We have perfect weather, a great crowd and a terrific concert. I think we have started a new tradition!”
After the laying of the wreaths in both Fanwood and Scotch Plains, the parade got underway just shortly after 10:30 am. The parade route was lined with hundreds of people braving the heat and humidity to watch the parade wend its way from Scotch Plains to Fanwood.
Many organizations were represented, from various veterans groups such as the Legion, to the High School Marching Band, Girl Scouts and the YMCA. Both Councils marched, along with Assembly Woman Linda Stender and Freeholder Chairman Al Mirabella, along with the Police, Fire and Rescue Squads. Vinnie and Nick Losavio of John’s Meat Market were the MC’s for the Scotch Plains portion of the Parade and Donna Dolce and Dale Flowers did the honors for the Fanwood portion of the parade.
“Our prayers were answered regarding the weather,” said Scotch Plains Councilman Kevin Glover, “and I want to thank everyone involved with both events for creating a weekend that truly represents what Memorial Day is all about – remembering our heroes.”
Phil Gans and the Memorial Day Committee also get a large vote of thanks from all the residents who enjoyed the fruits of their labor.
