Faith Lutheran Church Offers New Orleans Jazz Liturgies
Wednesday, August 27, 2014 • 4:14pm
On Sunday morning, September 7, Faith Lutheran Church will be offering two New Orleans Jazz Liturgies, at 8:30 and 11 am. Led by a traditional seven-piece ensemble, the congregation will be singing arrangements of favorite hymns and spirituals in the great joyous spirit of early jazz.
Faith Lutheran has been holding these services for the past 15 years, and has invited the top New Orleans players from around the country to participate. This year’s band includes Max Morden, cornet (The Gramercy Brass), Jack Stuckey, clarinet (Benny Goodman, and also in the pit of Broadways’ long-running musical Chicago), Alan Ferber, trombone (Grammy award nominee and Downbeat magazine top trombone poll winner), Joel Perry, guitar and banjo (blues master with Johnny Copeland), Bill Crow, tuba (jazz legend as bassist with Gerry Mulligan and Benny Goodman, among many others), Nick Scheuble, drums (Chico Mendoza, The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra) and is led by Faith’s minister of music, pianist John Girvin (arranger for Yamaha USA). The Faith Lutheran Choir will join in the leading of the congregations hymns.
“The spirituals and hymns of the church are a fertile ground for New Orleans style improvisation”, says Girvin, “and these services are unique in that we encourage the musicians to play with no limits to their imagination; it’s a wonderful morning to experience the power of this music”.
The Sunday Forum, which is at 9:40 am, will be a celebration in Franklin Nelson Hall of the various ministries of Faith Lutheran; such as the Newark Soup Kitchen; Appalachia in Sunset Gap, TN; Thanksgiving Food Collection; Knit, Purl and Pray, Broadway House, a residence for HIV/AIDS patients; Christmas Sharing Tree, African Mission Program, New Providence ARC Home and Pedals for Progress.
Members of the community are invited to both services as well as to the Forum.
