FAIRFIELD, NJ - On Saturday, Matthew Uhlendorf, a seventh grader at West Essex Middle School, presented the Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter with a check for $1,100 in honor of the victims at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Bettina Mianulli, the Health and Physical Education teacher at the Middle School, assigned Uhlendorf’s class a project of working 10 volunteer community service hours. He chose to fulfill those hours working at the Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter, a no-kill shelter in East Hanover.

Lori Scarangella Uhlendorf, Matthew’s mom, explained, “While he was volunteering, he realized that the shelter desperately needed a new washer/dryer because they are so committed to keeping everything clean and sanitary, and their machines are very old.”

Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter is a non-profit 501(c)(3) animal welfare organization that is 100% privately funded. According to their website, “no animal is ever euthanized for lack of space.”

Uhlendorf decided to run a donation campaign to raise funds for the washer/dryer set and he specifically wanted to present it to the shelter in honor of the victims in Newtown, CT. He asked people to donate $26; $1 for each Sandy Hook victim.

“I am so proud of my son, Matthew. He sent emails, Facebook posts and put letters in mailboxes. He raised $1,100!” his mom said.

On Saturday, Uhlendorf was able to present the check for $1,100 to the grateful staff members at Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter, Director Suzanne Roman and Volunteer Coordinator Rebecca Pollack.

If you are interested in further donating to this cause, their website has an online link available; in the comments be sure to write: “From the Matthew Uhlendorf campaign, in memory of Newtown, CT.”
