PATERSON, NJ - More than 250 hungry residents of the city were served a hot meal through the efforts of Eva's Village and Spencer Savings Bank.

Spencer Savings Bank, a community bank headquartered in Elmwood Park, lent its support to Eva’s Village, a non-profit social services organization in Paterson dedicated to changing the lives of the hungry, homeless and addicted, by volunteering in the community kitchen and serving more than 250 people in need of a hot lunch meal on Thursday, Dec. 5.

Spencer Savings Bank is a dedicated corporate sponsor of Eva’s Village “Fund-A-Meal” program. Through the sponsorship, employees of Spencer Savings Bank donate their time and services to prepare and serve meals to help feed members of the community that don’t have access or means of obtaining nutritious food. Eight bank employees and family members toured the organization’s facilities that span a three-block radius in Paterson and learned of the 15 programs offered at Eva’s Village, which include Eva’s Kitchen, emergency overnight shelter for men and women, shelter for women with children, transitional housing for homeless men and homeless women with children, various addiction treatment programs, a recovery center, free primary medical and dental care clinics,  affordable housing and an access center.

The Spencer Savings Bank team then aided the organization’s volunteers in preparing Eva’s Community Kitchen from start to finish. They set the plates, prepared the food, served more than 250 hot meals to people in need from the local community, and then cleaned up at the conclusion of the meal.

“Eva’s Village is a commendable organization and plays such a critical role in directly improving the lives of our neighbors and local residents who are in need of food, shelter, and various treatments,” said José B. Guerrero, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Spencer Savings Bank. “We are so lucky to have so many dedicated employees who are eager to volunteer their time to support Eva’s Village and the vital programs they provide.”

Eva’s Village (www.evasvillage.org), originally a New Jersey soup kitchen, was founded in 1982 by Msgr. Vincent E. Puma in response to the increasing incidence of homelessness in his Paterson parish. Msgr. Puma soon realized that a soup kitchen was not enough, and, with the support of thousands of donors and private and government grants, Eva's has grown into one of the most highly regarded anti-poverty programs in New Jersey.
