Elementary School Students: Plan Now for Success in High School Math Classes

When is the right time for your child to begin thinking about his or her high school math career?  The answer may surprise you.

“Elementary school families should begin planning now for the success of their children in high school,” says Maureen McGovern, owner of Chyten Tutoring and Test Prep in Millburn.

“Too many students wait until middle school placements have already been determined, whether through standardized testing like the NJ ASK or through other in-school assessments.  This placement  puts the student on a path in middle school that will determine eventually what classes they will be eligible to take in high school, and that may be too late.

Students can master mathematical strategies with a tutorial program that enhances their school experience.  This can give them the advantage they need early on to ensure that their middle school placement is where it should be.

“Many parents have no clue that classes their kids are taking in seventh grade, for example, have so much influence on what they might take in high school,” she said.

Parents who understand the process have the opportunity to put in a “mathematical support system” that will enable their child to maximize their potential.  Schools have a regimented system of advancing through the various levels of math, so the class that has been chosen for students in sixth grade will impact what class they are eligible to enroll in as a high school senior.

Students can ensure maximum placement levels by supplementing their studies with a companion tutorial program taught by certified teachers who are familiar with the various school curricula and who will help bridge the gap between what is taught in elementary school and what will be needed in secondary school.  The skills and knowledge that students demonstrate during these younger years lay the groundwork for their secondary placements, which will follow them through the years.  Once a student is placed in grade-level math, for instance, it is difficult for them to get all the way through higher-level calculus by senior year.  It is critical, McGovern says, to be placed on an aggressive track in order to have the high-school resume that will be noticed by the more competitive colleges.

“The time to begin is before elementary school is over,” she added.

There is no one correct style of learning for all children.  Families need to find a tutor who will work with an individual child to determine the best program tailored specifically to their unique learning style.
