Edison Man Charged with Investors Bank Robbery

EDISON, NJ - Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey and Chief Thomas J. Bryan of the Edison Police Department announced that Carmine Mauro of Edison was arrested and charged in connection with the robbery of Investors Bank on Amboy Ave in Edison that ended with his arrest in Newark following a police pursuit that started in Edison.

Mauro, 55, of Edison was charged with robbery and eluding police. He is being held at Trinitas Regional Medical Center in Elizabeth, where he is being treated for injuries he sustained when he crashed his vehicle during the 15 to 20 minute pursuit.

Edison Police were alerted at 10:36 a.m. today to the robbery at Investors Savings Bank on Amboy Avenue in Edison.

Officer Joe Chonka of the Edison Police Department was off-duty and near the bank when he followed the suspect, who was fleeing in a green minivan on Woodbridge Avenue.

Next to arrive was Officer Chris Felectto, who joined in the pursuit. Detective Ray Powers also participated in the pursuit.

The suspect turned onto the New Jersey Turnpike, headed north and turned off at Exit 13. He led police through Newark and Elizabeth before crashing on Routes 1 and 9 in Newark.

The minivan, which was heading north on Routes 1 and 9, jumped the concrete divider and struck two Elizabeth police vehicles before stopping in the southbound lanes of the highway.

Along the way, four Edison patrol cars were assisted by the New Jersey State Police, The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police, the Elizabeth Police Department and the Newark Police Department.

Officer Chonka sustained a minor injury and was treated and released from JFK Medical Center in Edison. None of the other officers involved in the chase was injured.

The preliminary investigation has determined that Mauro entered the bank, demanded money and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.

No one in the bank was injured.

The FBI was at the crime scene, assisting the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office and the Edison Police.

The investigation is active and is continuing. Bail has been set at $250,000.
