EDISON, NJ -  Two women were charged with theft by deception, misapplication of entrusted property and conspiring to commit those offenses following an extensive investigation by Detective Theodore Hamer of the Edison Police Department, Detective Thomas DellaSala of the Woodbridge Police and Detective Kenneth Freeman Jr. of the Carteret Police Department.

Middlesex County Acting Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey announced yesterday that two women have been indicted by a grand jury in Middlesex County on charges of accepting more than $75,000 in fees to help refinance mortgages and consolidate credit card debts and then failing to deliver lower payments to 11 customers.

Harvinder Kaur, also known as Anu Singh, 31, of Carteret, and Huma Halimi, also known as Helen Halimi, 33, of Garden City, N.Y., were named in the 25-count indictment charging them on April 30, 2014 with theft by deception, misapplication of entrusted property and conspiring to commit those offenses.

The detectives determined that between June 2009 and March 2010, the defendants accepted payments in various amounts and promised to negotiate the refinancing of mortgage payments and/or consolidate customers’ credit card debts.

The investigation further showed that the defendants, who represented themselves as agents of companies identified as Save My Home and/or Express Home Solutions, failed to negotiate reduced payments for the 11 customers and did not return the fees the customers paid to the defendants.

The defendants accepted the customers’ payments during meetings at the customers’ homes or the homes of the customers’ relatives, or at Kaur’s home in Carteret. The investigation began after the customers contacted police.

As is the case with all criminal defendants, Kaur and Halimi are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
