NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - The borough's Economic Development Committee recently met with representatives of Union County to discuss collaboration with the New Providence Borough Council.

Among the many topics discussed were ways to improve New Providence's downtown business area, parking and traffic-flow planning, open space and remediation process for brownfield sites.

Borough Councilmen Jim Madden, Gary Kapner and Bob Robinson and Borough Administrator Doug Marvin attended the meeting.

"[It] was a very productive meeting with the representatives of Union County to help us with several strategic initiatives," Madden said. "We believe we can accelerate some of these projects by leveraging their expertise within these key areas

"There's an abandoned brownfield site that we hope to convert to open space near Grove Park," Madden said. "We look forward to working with the county planner and other resources who attended the meeting to identify additional synergies to facilitate the remediation."

Madden credited fellow councilman Kapner with organizing the meeting, saying that Kapner "pulled a lot of people and expertise together."

The Economic Development Committee is comprised of residents, business owners, property owners, borough professionals, planning and zoning board members and elected officials.

"We are exploring funding opportunities, ways to leverage resources and to partner with county and state governments," Kapner said. "Our current focus is on passive recreation, traffic calming and control, pedestrian safety, connectivity and parking. These are key elements in the development of successful downtown."
