PATERSON, NJ - Isiah Wharton blocked a fourth-quarter extra point attempt to preserve Eastside's hard-fought 7-6 victory over Hackensack.
The win was the Ghosts' first of the season and in came against a Hackensack squad now coached by Paterson's football icon Benjie Wimberly.
Eastside took the lead in the second quarter on senior Zaire Glover's two-yard run. The drive was dominated by the Ghosts' running game, lead by Glover, Zurie Glover and Rasmeek Graham. One of the key plays was quarterback Jophon Pinkett's 17-yard completion to tight end Tymir Rice. Kevin Vereeco kicked the all-important extra point for Eastside.
The score stayed at 7-0 until Hacksack hit pay dirt in the fourth quarter. But Wharton's block on the extra point saved the game.
Sheldon Stuart lead the Ghosts' defense with two sacks and about 12 tackles.
"The kids came out and played hard,'' said Eastside Head Coach Jermain Johnson. "They left it on the field. That's our motto, 'Leave it on the field.'''
The Ghosts are now 1-3.
