PATERSON, NJ - In a battle of top-ranked, unbeaten teams from the east sides of their respective cities, Newark East Side came out on top.

On a 3-pointer at the buzzer in overtime, Newark East Side defeated Eastside High School of Paterson, 52-51, in the final game of the Freedom Fighters Classic in Eastside's gym in Paterson on Monday. The teams are currently ranked first and second in New Jersey by The Star-Ledger (Paterson's team was nominally the top team, but Newark's team is unofficially No. 1 after Monday's victory).

Eastside of Paterson ran out to a 13-1 lead after a quarter, but Newark East Side battled back, outscoring the Ghosts, 13-7, in the fourth quarter to force overtime.

Asem Johnson finished with 23 points, four rebounds and three 3-pointers for Eastside of Paterson, which is now 10-1. Aaryn Abrams scored eight points in the loss.

Earlier in the day, JFK of Paterson lost its game in the Freedom Fighter showcase, 59-38, to undefeated Don Bosco Prep. Guard Alphonso Gee led the Knights with 21 points and Charles Powell grabbed seven rebounds in the loss. John F. Kennedy is 7-5 on the season.
