NEWARK, NJ An Essex County jury has convicted East Orange resident Nicholas Welch, 28, of the September 2010 murder of 19-year-old Seton Hall University sophomore Jessica Moore, according to Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray.

The conviction followed a five-week trial before Superior Court Judge Robert H. Gardner. The jury also found Welch guilty of four counts attempted murder for shooting four other students, conspiracy, burglary, felony murder and weapon charges.  He was acquitted of hindering apprehension.

“We are very satisfied with this verdict. We believe justice has been served and hopefully Jessica Moore’s family can achieve a degree of closure with this verdict today,’’ said Assistant Prosecutor Romesh Sukhdeo, who tried the case with Assistant Prosecutor Jamel Semper.

Sentencing is scheduled for May 30. Welch has 12 prior arrests and one prior felony conviction. He faces 30 years to life on the murder charge and 10 to 20 years on the attempted murder counts.

On Sept. 25, 2010, Moore, an honors student from Disputanta, Va. was fatally shot by Welch after he was thrown out of an off-campus private party being given by members of a fraternity.

Welch who lived in the 500 block of South Clinton Street in East Orange, where the party was being held, told the young men holding the party that he could come to any house on that block. When they threw him out he retrieved a gun and came back and opened fire on the party, which was attended by about 100 Seton Hall University students.
